Expanding access to Vascular Surgery care in Trinidad and Tobago
Our mission is to provide you with personalized, high-quality care in the treatment of vascular diseases. Vascular Surgery has historically been an underserved medical specialty in the Caribbean which results in high rates of limb loss (amputation), morbidity and mortality. Our goal is to improve access to care for diseases of the vascular system and narrow healthcare disparities in Trinidad, Tobago and the southern Caribbean. Increased access to vascular specialists has been proven to save lives and limbs.
Angiosome Vascular is committed to increasing awareness of vascular diseases through patient education thus empowering our patients to take charge of their own healthcare decision making and health maintenance.
Our internationally trained surgeons are committed to providing you with advanced, cutting edge, minimally invasive, endovascular surgical procedures which result in shorter recovery times, less pain and excellent outcomes.

The vascular system is like the plumbing of your body and vascular surgeons are the plumbers! The vascular system comprises of the arteries and veins of your body which are basically pipes that carry blood from your heart to your organs and then return that blood back to your heart, respectively. Blood is the elixir of life and is necessary to take nutrients to and remove waste products from cells, tissues and organs. If there is insufficient blood supply to these cells, tissues and organs it leads to a lack of oxygen also known as ischemia. If left uncorrected, ischemia leads to malfunction and eventually death of these structures. The vascular system can be affected by blockages, caused by clots or cholesterol plaques, which can impede blood flow and lead to ischemia. The clinical consequences of these blockages include stroke, heart attack, gangrene of the legs and amputation. The vascular system can also be affected by degeneration of the walls of the vessels which can cause them to expand and weaken causing aneurysms. These aneurysms can eventually rupture and lead to life threatening bleeding. The aim of the vascular surgeon is to identify and surgically repair these defects to avoid these limb and life threatening complications.
The spectrum of vascular disease is vast but the most common problems we treat include
Peripheral Arterial Disease
Aortic and Peripheral Aneurysms
Carotid Disease and Stroke Prevention
Deep Venous Insufficiency and DVT
Superficial Venous Disease and Varicose Veins
Mesenteric and Renovascular Disease
Dialysis Access Creation and Maintenance
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
You can rely on us to treat all of your vascular surgical problems. We employ traditional, time tested open surgical techniques as well as advanced, innovative endovascular techniques in treating your disease including
Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR/TEVAR)
Peripheral Angioplasty and Stenting
Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting
IVC Filter Placement and Removal
Endovenous Iliocaval Reconstruction
Mechanical Thrombectomy
Stroke can have devastating consequences for patients and can lead to significant permanent disability and even death. Plaque formation and blockage in the carotid arteries of the neck are the second leading cause of stroke. Stroke from carotid disease can be prevented with surgical intervention by your vascular specialist.

Peripheral Arterial Disease affects approximately 7% of the general population and 30% of adults older than 60. It occurs when the arteries to the limbs are blocked. It can cause life limiting pain in the legs, ulcers and gangrene which can ultimately lead to amputation and limb loss. Amputation severely affects your quality of life and has also been shown to decrease life expectancy. Access to vascular specialists and early intervention has been shown to save limbs and lives.

Aortic Aneurysm occurs when the main blood vessel of the body becomes weakened and can rupture. It causes severe internal bleeding which quickly leads to death. It is more common in men and smoking, increasing age, hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol are all risk factors. Rupture can be prevented by elective repair. Screening for abdominal aneurysm is recommended by the US Preventative Services Task Force for all men older than 65. Early detection and treatment improves survival related to aneurysms.

Dialysis access is important for safe dialysis and patient survival. The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative recommends a Fistula First Policy for access. Tunneled catheters are only meant to be a temporary solution and are associated with severe infectious complications that can lead to sepsis, venous occlusion, endocarditis and even death. All patients with kidney failure or impeding kidney failure should visit a vascular surgeon to discuss creation of a long term dialysis access.

Varicose Veins are very common especially in females and can be bothersome. It can be a sign of venous hypertension and can lead to permanent skin changes with discoloration and eventual formation of leg ulcers. It is also a risk factor for developing blood clots. It is possible to treat varicose veins with laser ablation and injection for an excellent functional and cosmetic outcome.
